Screenshot captures what is on your screen, which is about as private as data gets. Here is exactly what the app does and does not do with it.

1. Overview

Screenshot is a macOS menu-bar app for capturing, annotating and organizing screenshots. Capture, annotation, text recognition and storage all happen on your Mac. There is no backend service that sees your images.

2. Data Collection

Screenshot does not collect any personal data. Specifically, we do not:

  • Collect names, emails, or contact information
  • Upload, transmit, or view your captures
  • Send the text recognized in your captures anywhere
  • Use advertising SDKs or data brokers
  • Use analytics or crash-reporting SDKs

3. Data Storage

Everything Screenshot creates lives locally on your Mac:

  • Captures: ~/.screenshots by default (configurable in Settings), as a plain folder of PNG files.
  • Annotations: a JSON sidecar file next to each PNG, holding your markup, crop and canvas styling.
  • Recognized text: cached inside that same sidecar so the library can search it.
  • Settings: your shortcuts, capture preferences and appearance choice, in the app’s preferences.

None of this is synced or uploaded anywhere. The original capture is written once and never modified, so your markup and crop stay reversible.

4. Permissions

macOS gates the things Screenshot needs, and asks you before granting each one:

  • Screen Recording. Required to capture anything at all. Requested on your first capture.
  • Accessibility. Used to drive the auto-scroll during a scrolling capture.

Both are granted by you in System Settings and can be revoked there at any time.

5. Network Access

Screenshot makes one kind of outbound connection:

  • Update checks. The app uses Sparkle to check our update feed for new versions. This only sends your current app version, not personal data, unless you explicitly opt in to Sparkle’s anonymous system-profile sharing, which is off by default.

Your captures never leave your Mac. Text recognition runs on-device through Apple’s Vision framework, with no network call involved.

6. Third-Party Services

Screenshot bundles one on-device, open-source component:

  • Sparkle handles update checks, as described above.

We do not use any advertising networks, analytics platforms, or data brokers.

7. Your Control

You’re in full control of your data at all times.

  • Delete a capture in the library sidebar to remove its PNG and sidecar from disk.
  • Point the capture folder anywhere you like in Settings.
  • Uninstall the app and delete your capture folder to erase everything Screenshot has stored.

8. Children’s Privacy

Screenshot is a general-purpose utility for a general audience and is not directed at children.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect improvements or changes in functionality. If we do, we’ll update the Effective Date at the top of this page.
